Musculoskeletal
Shockwave Therapy

MUSCULOSKELETAL SHOCKWAVE THERAPY IS A SERIES OF ENERGETIC SHOCKWAVES APPLIED TO THE AREA NEEDING TREATMENT.  A SHOCKWAVE IS PURELY A MECHANICAL WAVE, NOT AN ELECTRICAL ONE.

THE TREATMENT INITIATES AN INFLAMMATORY-LIKE RESPONSE IN THE TISSUE BEING TREATED TO PROMOTE HEALING.

The body responds to this shockwave process by increasing blood circulation to the affected area which in turn accelerates the body’s own healing processes. Shockwave therapy is thought to promote the release of Substance P from cells, a powerful pain relief protein.  It also has effects on cells, increasing their defence mechanisms by causing the release of free radicals.  It is known to promote bone growth and aid in tissue healing.  It also acts to overstimulate nerve fibres, which then block an increase in pain stimuli causing a large analgesic effect.

Shockwave Therapy offers many advantages over traditional surgical methods:

  1. No known major side effects

  2. Faster return to normal activities

  3. No anaesthesia

  4. Non-invasive and can replace the need for surgery in many cases

  5. Virtually painless after treatment

  6. Significant clinical benefit often seen 6-12 weeks after treatment

  7. Most conditions only require 3-6 treatments

  8. Cheaper treatment compared to surgery

WHAT IS THE SUCCESS RATE OF SHOCKWAVE THERAPY?

Documented international results show an overall result success rate of 77% in chronic conditions that have not been cured with other kinds of treatments. Shockwave therapy has been shown to relieve pain in more than 80% of patients in just 3-4 treatments.  It has been shown to have a 94% success rate in pain relief after 12 weeks in the treatment of plantar fasciitis.  The current evidence shows that shockwave therapy produces better results than cortisone injections, and in turn provides a safe and low side effect treatment by promoting your body's own healing potential.  Shockwave therapy is a regenerative treatment, whereas cortisone causes degeneration of tissues over time.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF SHOCKWAVE THERAPY?

Shockwave Therapy is applied without medication.  The treatment stimulates and effectively supports the body’s self-healing mechanisms. It is usual to experience immediate pain relief following the treatment and hence improved movement. Reported side effects are minimal, however there may be some discomfort during treatment, skin reddening, and possible bruising.

IS SHOCKWAVE THERAPY SAFE?

As with all our treatments, yes.

  • Cortisone injections are not to be administered within the last 11 weeks prior to shockwave therapy treatment
